Hungary - Leisure cycling - 8 days

First part of our tour along the Danube from Vienna to the Southern border of Hungary. You can combine this Vienna-Budapest with the second part : From Budapest to the Southern border of Hungary.


This circuit will make you discover all the facets of the majestic river Danube. You will cross over bridges and with ferries. You will get to know its islands, you’ll ride on its right bank and its left bank passing 3 differents countries having a common past (Austria, Slovakia and Hungary).


Program
Day 1 Vienna
Baroque palaces where the frou-frou of crinolines still buzzg, crowded cafes recalling the beginning of the XIX century, buildings shaped as a piece mounted and masterpieces of Art Nouveau. Vienna is also an imperial city. City of history and European culture, Vienna combines past and present while emphasising its cultural heritage. Night at the hotel.

Day 2 From Vienna to Bratislava
Bratislava is the city of millennium history with its historical center very well renovated full of marvelously baroque palaces, fountains and romantic alleyways. Like Budapest and Vienna, Bratislava was once the city of crowning kings. Bratislava is also the city of culture. Each year are organized many cultural events.

Day 3 From Bratislava to the small village of Szigetköz
The third day you make a detour in Hungary on the island of Szigetköz which is surrounded by the Danube. The flora and fauna are very diverse and the architecture is also amazing, you can discover the city of Hédervár, its church from the early 15th century and its castle transformed into a hotel today.
You will be fascinated by the memories of the Renaissance and Baroque architecture or by the wonderful Zsolnay earthenware.

Day 4 From Szigetköz to Komárno
You are back on the road toward Slovakia, but before crossing the border, you will discover Györ. It is a city rich in monuments and history. Györ is vibrant, alive with festivals of music (classical, jazz and contemporary) and film. It is located at the edge of the Old Danube and the Raba river. You’ll spend the night in Komárno : a city that was divided by the Great War and now reunited by the European Union. On the other side is the city of Komarom (Hungary).

Day 5 From Komárno to Esztergom
You will pedal on the Slovakian side of the Danube until the next bridge located 50 kms away. Crossing the bridge you will arrive in the city of Esztergom, where we recomand you to get around town to visit its famous Basilica, the largest in Hungary.
Distance: 55km.

Day 6 From Esztergom to Szentendre
You continue on the right bank up to Visegrád, do not miss the royal fortress to enjoy the splendid panorama over the Danube Bend. You cross the Danube with a ferry to left bank where you have a superb view of the fortress overlooking the river. Arrival at the town of Vác, you cross again the Danube to reach the island of Szentendre. Return to the right bank with the ferry and enter Szentendre, a village of artists with its Orthodox churches and colorful houses.
Distance: 62km.

Day 7 From Szentendre to Budapest
Budapest is a city full of history and particularly active. You will need much more than a day to visit the capital cut in two by the Danube. Whether by its hundreds of thermal baths around the city, its monuments, its animation along the pedestrian streets, or its restaurants, Budapest will definitely charm you. The end of your stay will be devoted to exploring this beautiful city.

Day 8 Budapest
End of the journey after breakfast.
